Leg Press Plate Math & Incline Physics
Many lifters calculate their leg press total simply by adding up the plates on the pegs. However, a standard commercial leg press runs on a 45-degree angle, applying classical vector mechanics described in the physics of an inclined plane.
Actual Gravitational Resistance = Total Mass × sin(45°) = Total Mass × 0.7071
In addition, commercial leg press sleds (such as Hammer Strength or Cybex) typically have an empty tare weight between 75 lbs and 118 lbs (34 to 54 kg). When you load eight 45 lb plates (360 lbs in plates), the actual weight moved against gravity is:
(360 lb plates + 100 lb sled) × 0.7071 ˜ 325.2 lbs of true vertical resistance.
